Vienna School of Botanical Illustration - GetTogether 2025 (Part 1)

My summary of the most beautiful and warm encounter of talented and inspiring artists

Every two years, in the heart of Vienna, at the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna, an event organized for the third time by the Vienna School of Botanical Illustration brought together artists from all over the world to share their love for botanical art and illustration.

This year, the event was organized by the wonderful members of the association, led by Margareta Pertl and Friederike Kirchner, between May 25th - June 1st. It included workshops, portfolio presentations, visits and tours, dinners, an exhibition, wine tasting, and even a raffle and bidding event.

The workshops and their topics were:

  • Esmée Winkel: Leaf Details With Dry Brush – Watercolour With Limited Palette
  • Mary Dillon: Painting Pomegrenates With Light and Colour on Paper
  • Carol Woodin: Radishes – Dry Point Painting on Vellum
  • Vincent Jeannerot: Pen and Watercolour – Cross-Hatching
  • Chrystal Shin: Heritage Tomatoes in Coloured Pencil
  • Deborah Lambkin (whose website is being updated, hence linking to social media): Delving Deeper Into Plants – Botanical Illustration in Ink, Pencil, and Watercolour, as well as Training on Dealing With Juries
  • Sarah Roberts: Dissections in Colour (Watercolour)

The visits and tours included but were not limited to:

  • A wonderful tour of the Botanical Garden of the University of Vienna, led by the wonderful and kind Dr. Monika Kiehn & Dr. Michael Kiehn
  • State Hall of Austrian National Library
  • Academy of Fine Arts Vienna
  • Palm House at Schönbrunn Palace

I was amazed at the beauty, expertise, variety in technique and style showcased by the everyone - the workshop teachers as well as each and every single participant. In the coming weeks, I'll be publishing some little articles about each workshop and my takeaways. So if you're curious, I invite you to follow along.

Should you wish to join the members of the association in their weekly get togethers at the Botanical Garden, there is a jour-fixe every Friday, from 2 to 5 p.m., at the Alpengarten, Belvedere.
